What 'equipment' do you need in your kitchen?
June 16, 2011
I’m clueless on cooking but from reading recipes it seems so complicated that every dish seems to need it’s own set of machines :-s …. can much be made with just, a stove, an oven, and, hands?
what else do I need to begin? a mixing bowl, a tray for the oven, frying pans…. etc etc etc
Most dishes can be made with simple equipment, though (especially for some things) having specific tools/equipment can just speed things up a lot. You’ll figure out which ones you need and want to invest in (or get inexpensively from thrift shops, relatives, Walmart/etc, online, etc) as you go along.
There are some "basic" pieces of equipment, bakeware, and tools, etc, that most people feel are necessary though. You can find lots of suggestions for those online, and often in cookbooks that cover all topics (not just oriented toward a particular topic) …look for those books in libraries, or just browse through them at bookshops and write down their suggestions.
Here are some suggestions (keep in mind that some people will consider certain items "essential" that many others wouldn’t!):

You can also get away with only a limited number of "pantry staples" or "kitchen staples" (including frig staples) and be able to cook a load of different things. You can add to those as you learn new recipes or find you like certain cuisines, tastes, etc.

Some good extra pieces of equipment to have even in the beginning would be an inexpensive rice cooker and slow cooker (you could get smaller ones).
Both can be used in lots of ways, and can cook all kinds of things inside:

Of course, a microwave oven can also cook almost anything (that doesn’t need browning), and is important just for reheating, cooking veggies, etc, too:
